wilwheaton: inothernews: Besides the hype, besides the technical fuckups of NASDAQ, besides the overvaluation and offering too many shares during their IPO, I think the reason Facebook’s stock is failing as much as it is right now is that people have come to realize that Everybody’s Favorite Social Network is just too obnoxious, intrusive, and data-scrapingly assholish in the way it treats everyone from its most ardent users to, sadly, people on third-party platforms like, I dunno, TUMBLR, that perhaps want nothing at all to do with the privacy black hole that is Mark Zuckerberg’s dickishness incarnate but wake up and log on to find THIS UTTER BULLSHIT. These self-venerating imperial prerogatives are the premises driving the vast bulk of American foreign policy and military discourse. It is certainly what’s driving the spectacle of so many people pretending that the punishment of Dr. Afridi is some sort of aberrational act which the U.S. and other Decent, Civilized Countries would never do.

Glad to see someone point out the hypocricy of the outrage over Dr. Afridi’s sentencing. If you start a fake vaccination camp, thereby exposing hundreds of children to Hep B while they’re under the impression they’re protected (all while essentially committing treason) I’m not sure why you’d expect to be let off without a prison sentence. Unless you’re siding with the US, of course, in which case… just read the article.

Bloomberg: SEC Ends Lehman Probe, No Action Sought

Bloomberg reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has ended its probe into possible financial fraud at Lehman Brothers, and will not recommend enforcement action against former executives of the defunct investment house.

Un-fucking-believable.

This means that either the laws are so worthless, they actually did not do anything legally wrong, or the SEC is so profoundly corrupt that they won’t touch Lehman.

Either way, the fucking banksters need to be burned to the goddamn ground.

Or C) All of the above. 

In any case, the feeding frenzy has already begun. The banksters will eat each other before it’s all done.

jtotheizzoe: A Self-Portrait of Opportunity I want you to stop and think about something. This is a picture of another planet. Where this robot is. Right now. As we sit here on Earth in this or any moment, we each have in our heads a flurry of worries and questions and ideas. And most of them pertain to our own lives. That’s okay, it’s human nature. We are each the center of our own universe. I often think about this in crowded places, like while in traffic, as the place I’m going is far more important than the place all of these other people are going. I’m convinced that they feel the same way. And so we sit. But that means that there are seven billion mental universes walking around on this planet. We are staring into them through little digital windows that we carry in our hands, and certain that this decision is the most important decision. Everything that is happening is happening to us. Yet for the past eight years, there has been a dusty, six-wheeled rover crawling around the surface of Mars, completely alone. Incidentally, that rover has exceeded its expected mission of 90 days by thirty-two times over. That’s admirable, and I can’t help but personify the little guy. Like a sort of scrappy, diligent explorer, quietly working hard for the benefit of someone else. “No complaints, boss!” Like Johnny 5 meets Wall-E. And so we get images like this, reminding us that every day we can look beyond our personal universe. What a thought! Look at how much is out there. Think of what else we could see! Let’s go.

As a fellow parent of a toddler, I can understand where she’s coming from, so I forwarded the email around the rest of Editorial, asking what we could do to help, and like when Cap yells, ‘Avengers Assemble,’ the gang leapt into action.” Not only did Anthony receive an image of the superhero Hawkeye, who lost 80 percent of his hearing back in the ’80s and wore hearing aids — Anthony also received a drawing, by Nelson Ribeiro in Collected Editions, of a brand-new superhero: “Blue Ear.” Now, with his hearing aid back in, Anthony is able to “fight battles and help people.” His preschool, for hearing-impaired kids, recently hosted a superhero week to inspire the students to overcome their limitations.
